Monsters

Monsters in Haven are categorized by family, a group of monsters with similar traits. There are currently 29 distinct families, though this number may grow or shrink as the project develops.

Kemonomimi

Kemonomimi greatly resemble human women, but are wild and feral by nature and have the ears and tail of animals. They have various forms, and all bear elemental powers of some sort. Kemonomimi monsters are considered humanoid, and thus can equip weapons and armor. All Kemonomimi have the Alluring skill, which reduces damage from opposite-sex opponents. All Kemonomimi are female.

Cat

The Cat family consists of various felines, ranging in size from monsters resembling house cats to those as large and fierce as lions and tigers. All Cats have the Cat Fight skill, which provides a damage boost when fighting an opponent who also has the Cat Fight skill.

Dog

The dog family includes various canine monsters; those based on dogs, wolves, jackals, and so on and so forth. Dogs vary widely in size and appearance, but all bear a familiar four-legged from. Personality and disposition also vary between members of this family, from the loyal Gelert to the vicious Waheela to the terrifying Padfoot. All Dogs have the Shake Off skill, which renders them immune to the Damp status. Dogs tend to have a high attack stat.

Fox

All members of the Fox family are based on foxes, both real and mythological. Foxes are omnivorous, quadruped mammals distantly related to Dogs. All Foxes have the Cunning skill, which renders them immune to the Confuse status. Foxes tend to have high speed or magic.

Horse

Horse monsters are the equines of Haven, and take on various appearances from mundane to monstrous. Swift moving, Horses are sometimes used for transportation. All Horses have the Swift skill, which doubles movement speed as long as there's a Horse in the party. Use of any vehicle overrides the Swift skill. Horses tend to have a high speed stat.

Deer

The Deer family includes Haven's deer, antelope, gazelle, elk, caribou, and moose population. Deer appear almost exclusively in forested areas, and typically aren't as widely distributed as other families. All Deer have the Skittish skill, which makes the flee action successful 100% of the time during random encounters. Deer tend to have a high speed stat.

Bat

The Bat family consists of flying mammals, ranging from very small to human-sized. During the day, Bats can be found only in caves, but at night they roam. All Bats have the Nocturnal skill, which enables them to recover HP while moving at night. Bats tend to have a high magic stat.

Scurrier

Squirrels, Chipmunks, prairie dogs, raccoons, woodchucks, weasels, ferrets, stoats, and minks fall into the Scurrier family. Within the world of Haven, all are small furry mammals adept at climbing trees. All Scurriers have the Climber skill, which enables them to climb trees and retrieve items without knowing the Climb ability. Scurriers tend to have a high speed stat.

Water Beast

The Water Beast family consists of otters, beavers, and other amphibious mammals. Water Bests can be found in water, or on land near bodies of water. All Water Beasts have the Strong Swimmer skill, which doubles movement speed while the party is moving through water.

Hyena

While the Hyena family has little variation compared to some of the more diverse families, Hyenas are fierce fighters and thus desirable additions to any damage-focused party. Best known for their eerie, human-like laugh, many are intimidated by Hyenas. All Hyenas have the Punisher skill, causing physical attacks to deal 20% extra damage.

Rodent

Mice, rats, hamsters, and gerbils compose the Rodent family. With few exceptions, they are very small and fast moving mammals. All Rodents have the Speedy skill, which gives the party a higher chance of preemptive strikes. Rodents tend to have a high speed stat.

Bear

Ursine monsters that are typically of very large, solid build. Bears are very powerful, aggressive monsters that can cause problems for travelers. They also tend to be rather difficult to capture as they are willful and resist magic circles. All Bears have the Punisher skill, causing physical attacks to deal 20% extra damage.. Bears tend to have high attack and constitution.

Gnome

Gnomes are based on real-world skunks, badgers, and wolverines. As burrowing mammals, Gnomes tend to live underground in dens. The family was discovered and named by Goblins, to whom the Gnomes are a focal point of many myths and legends. All Gnomes have the Burrower skill, which allows them to retrieve items that are hidden underground without knowing the Burrow ability. Gnomes tend to have high attack power.

Longears

The rabbits and hares of Haven are classified under the Longears family. Longears are named for their large ears, which give them excellent hearing abilities to help them detect predators. They're very fast moving animals, and if encountered randomly they may flee the protagonist's party if they're losing. All Longears have the Rapid Assault skill, which gives them a random chance of attacking a second time whenever a melee ability connects.

Cattle

The Cattle family encompasses cows, pigs, goats, yaks, and bison. Cattle tend to be rather slow moving, but have stout bodies and can shrug off a lot of damage. All cattle have the Grazer skill, which enables them to recover HP while moving in grassy areas. Cattle tend to have high defense and constitution.

Dragon

'Dragon' is a general term for the legged reptiles of Haven. Ranging from tiny geckoes to massive true dragons, this is a widespread and diverse family. All dragons have a preternatural resistance to damage, shown in the entire family's possession of the resilient skill.

Serpent

A diverse family that ranges from snakes to massive serpentine dragons. The Serpent group is associated with the Poison element, and many of its members are venomous. All Serpents have the Antitoxin skill, rendering them immune to the poison status. Serpents tend to have high magic and resistance.

Aquatic

Freshwater fish and turtles fall into the Aquatic family. They populate the ponds, lakes, creeks, and rivers of Haven. While easy to encircle, Aquatic monsters tend to be rather mundane when compared to their stronger Marine cousins. All Aquatics have the Aqualung skill, which constantly restores HP while moving through water.

Marine

Saltwater fish, eels, rays, and sea monsters fall into the Marine group. Only found in the vast oceans of Haven, Marine monsters have far more room to grow than Aquatics. Some of the most ferocious beats in the world lurk within the briny deep. All Marines have the Deep Diver skill, which allows the protagonist to dive further underwater than usual.

Hardshell

Lobsters, crabs, crayfish, shrimp, and similar crustaceans form the Hardshell group. While most are not capable of rapid movement, Hardshells have a high defense stat and many also have a high attack stat. Their heightened defensive power enables them to take on a tank-type role in the party. All Hardshells have the Resilient skill, which reduces damage from incoming physical attacks. Hardshells tend to have high attack and defense.

Insect

Beetles, flies, wasps. ants, and various other bugs form the Insect family. This family also includes various worms, as many have a worm-like larval form. Adult Insects tend to have six legs, but some worm-like monsters never develop legs and some develop many. Like Serpents, Insects are heavily associated with the poison element, but they do not share the serpentine immunity. All Insects have the Survivor skill, which has a chance of nullifying one-hit kill attacks.

Arachnid

Spiders, scorpions, mites, and ticks form the Arachnid group. While varying in size and shape, all share the common factor of having eight legs. Arachnids tend to be more aggressive than the similar Insect family. All Arachnids are poisonous, without exception. All Arachnids have the Toxicity skill, which enables normal-elemental physical attacks to sometimes cause the poison status.

Bird

Birds are two-legged, winged, feathered creatures most comfortable in the open expanses of the sky. Wild Birds sometimes collect small items and stash them in perches, and popular perches are often marked by distinctive droppings. All Birds have the Strong Flyer skill, which allows them to check Bird perches for items even without knowing the Retrieve ability.

Hybrid

Hybrids are almost never seen in the wild, and take the form of anthropomorphic animals. Each type of Kemonomimi resembles a specific monster family. If a male monster of a certain family is bred with the corresponding Kemonomimi, the offspring will be a Hybrid. These monsters tend to be rather powerful, and as humanoid monsters they can equip weapons and armor. Some may even metamorph differently if equipped with the right gear…

All Hybrids have the Hybrid skill, which makes them humanoid class if facing an opponent or ability that has a bonus against beasts, or a beast if facing an opponent or ability that has a bonus against humanoids.

Amorphous

Amorphous monsters take no permanent shape; they are animated masses of slime or mold. While not fast moving, their lack of a solid body makes them difficult to hit and kill. All Amorphous monsters have the Jelly skill, which reduces incoming damage from physical attacks.

Drifter

Drifters are mysterious, invisible spirits which inhabit the world of Haven. Their origin, purpose, and method of survival are entirely unknown to even the most accomplished scientific authorities. Drifters are able to inhabit the corpses of humans, causing the dead to move as though alive. While in a body, Drifters may use weapons and armor. All Drifters have the Ichor skill, rendering them immune to poison status as well as damaging any opponent that uses an HP-draining ability.

Breeding Compatibility: Drifters cannot breed.

Hominid

Monsters that resemble humans in form, but don't fit into another family. This family includes various animated dolls and other human-like beings including trolls and goblins. As a humanoid family, they can use weapons and armor. All Hominids have the Sleepless skill, rendering them immune to the sleep status.

Ghost

Sometimes believed to be the spirits of the dead, Ghosts are mysterious, often weightless beings who are shy of humans and other monsters and most often inhabit places that have been abandoned by other life forms. As they are difficult to find and encircle, Ghosts are poorly understood by humans and surrounded by superstition. All Ghosts have the Spirited skill, rendering them immune to all status effects.

Body Class: Phantom
Breeding Compatibility: Ghosts cannot breed.

Shifter

Bizarre monsters that have no form to truly call their own. While taking a humanoid appearance when interacting with people, their natural form (if such a form exists) is unknown to any, possibly even the Shifters themselves. All Shifters have the Shapeshift skill, making the Memorize and Shift abilities available from the monster actions menu at any time. Up to four shapes can be memorized at a time, and can be shifted to during battle later. Shifters can equip weapons and armor, but if they shift into a form that can't, the equipment is rendered unusable until the end of battle.
