Magic circles are magical glyphs that the protagonist may use to perform a variety of actions during combat; from forming empathic bonds with wild monsters to unleashing magical energy without use of MP. They are simple magic that anyone can learn how to do, but even expert users are not successful all of the time.

Glyphs
A magic circle is a special rune drawn in chalk. While mundane in appearance, the glyph within a magic circle can have a variety of powers. Currently only four glyphs are known; empathy, power, life, and energy.
Glyph of Empathy
The bond created by a glyph of empathy is no enslavement, this is its major drawback in pacifying hostile monsters. For a glyph to be effective, the monster it is used upon must accept the glyph willingly. Some monsters are easier to bond than others, but all have the power to refuse a glyph. Glyphs of empathy are only effective on monsters, they have no effect on human beings or inanimate objects.
If a monster accepts a glyph of empathy, an empathic bond is formed between the monster and the human who drew the circle. In an instant, the human learns the sum of all of the monster's experiences, and contrariwise. Through the magical bond, a human and monster are able to communicate even without compatible languages. A monster can only be bound to one human at a time, but a human can form multiple bonds. Bonds cannot be transfered, if a circle is broken then the bond is lost.
While monsters are often inclined to follow the human to which they are bound, they retain free will. If very dissatisfied with the actions of a person, a monster even has the ability to break a circle whenever it pleases. Humans are not the only beings on Haven to have a concept of morality; some monsters will abandon the human to which they are bound in response to morally objectionable actions, while some others might become disinterested in an overly benevolent person and leave in search of carnage.

Glyph of Power
The glyph of power is the simplest of all glyphs, it releases a burst of magical energy that causes damage to all enemies. Damage dealt depends on the quality of chalk used and the protagonist's aptitude with magic. All glyphs are magical/ranged attacks.

Glyph of Life
The glyph of life is similar in purpose to the glyph of power, but it converts the released magical energy into life force. The glyph of life restores an amount of HP to the entire party whenever used, the exact level of healing and the element of the restorative energy is determined by the chalk used and the protagonist's MGC stat.

Glyph of Energy
Somewhere between the glyph of power and the glyph of life; the glyph of energy releases magical energy configured to be absorbed directly as MP. It carries no elemental properties and simply restores a lump sum of MP to the entire party.

Composition
Magic circles are special runes, the magic is within the pattern. They can be drawn in a variety of mediums, but many have been found to be ineffective of unpredictable. Chalk is naturally very conductive to magic and is most often used. White chalk is inexpensive and moderately effective, but there are also magical chalks which are more effective in general and special elementally charged chalk that are more effective against monsters of a particular element.
