Devon and Marle are in the protagonist's party as guests during the game's introductory battle, and explain various gameplay mechanics as a sort of tutorial. They are allies during the Defender's Honor quest, but part ways with the protagonist afterwards.

Backstory
Devon, Marle, and the protagonist all grew up together in the same small town, in the same neighborhood. As such, their bond of friendship is unbreakable. Marle, being the eldest of the trio, sometimes takes on the role of a mentor with her companions. When many of Whitevale's defenders left town, the three of them took up weapons to help protect their home town at the ages of 23, 24, and 26 (respectively). Marle never learned how to make magic circles and simply keeps Jewels as an ordinary pet.
Party
Devon, Marle, and their monsters form a guest party that assists the protagonist during the Defender's Honor quest. Marle focuses on weapon attacks, while Devon concentrates on healing. Their party changes several times during this quest.
