Battle

While city life is often safe thanks to barriers that prevent monsters from entering, the world of Haven is a dangerous place. While wandering the wilderness, in dungeons, and in unprotected towns the protagonist is likely to encounter groups of enemies.

Taking and Dealing Damage

Physical attacks determine attack power by multiplying a monster's ATK by the ability power and dividing by the target's DEF. Magical attacks determine power by multiplying the monster's MGC by the ability power and diving by the target's RES. When an enemy reaches 0 HP, it dies. When a party member reaches 0 HP, it goes into 'dying' status and can't fight until revived. When a guest reaches 0 HP, it retreats and returns after 10 turns (if the battle is still going on.)

Some abilities cause status effects, which can rapidly turn the tide in a battle. Most status effects can be removed by items and abilities, but some can only be cured with time.

Battle Time Gauge

Each point of the speed stat contributes one point per second to the battle time gauge. When a monster or character's BTG fills to 150, it is their turn to act. Depending on the battle time setting, enemy BTGs may or may not continue to fill while the protagonist's party is selecting abilities.

Active Battle Time

Enemy BTGs will continue to fill while the protagonist's party is choosing actions, enemies may attack while the player is selecting abilities.

Tactical Battle Time

Enemy BTGs pause when the player opens an item or ability menu.

Experience and Loot

After battle, the protagonist's party will receive experience based on the enemies fought, as well as loot. Enemies will drop whatever item they're carrying, which may not be anything at all. Any enemy carrying a gun will also drop ammunition.

Party

The protagonist may choose up to five monsters to accompany him/her. These monsters will participate in battle when the protagonist is attacked, unless a status effect prevents them from doing so. Enemy parties typically include six or less monsters, but special encounters may include up to twelve.

Third Party

Sometimes, a third party will appear on the battle screen. This may be a second group of enemies (allowing the enemy to have up to 12 combatants), a neutral party that is hostile to both standard parties, a neutral party that is hostile to neither until attacked, or a friendly party that the protagonist can optionally rescue for a reward.

Guests

Sometimes, guests will add themselves to the protagonist's party during quests. The guest party may contain up to six characters/monsters, and they are all computer controlled. Sometimes a quest reward will include a guest who can be called upon at any time, but only one guest can follow the protagonist under normal circumstances. Guests added by a quest will automatically displace any freely added guests.

Row

When arranging the party, the player can choose which row a character or monster occupies. Monsters in the front row take and deal full damage from melee weapons, monsters in the back row take less melee damage but also deal less melee damage. Ranged attacks deal full damage regardless of row.

Melee Damage Front Row Back Row
Front Row 100% 80%
Back Row 80% 60%

Abilities

Abilities are various attacks and spells that deal damage and cause status effects. Each monster may memorize up to ten abilities, but may only equip four at a time. Passive abilities do not need to be equipped to take effect. The protagonist always knows the punch, party command, magic circle, and item abilities. Equipping weapons and scrolls allows for more than four abilities to be used in combat.

Party Command

The protagonist may issue a command to the entire party rather than allowing them to select individual abilities. Party commands that turn monsters over to computer control will override individual auto-battle settings.

Auto-Battle

In the party menu, the player can set any of the protagonist's monsters to be controlled by the computer. The protagonist is always under player control. Auto-battle has various role settings which determine what abilities an auto-battle monster will use.
